Supporting Carers Debate in Westminster (1st July 2010)

Carers were the subject of a debate in Westminster yesterday where many MPs asked questions to Paul Burstow (Minister of State (Care Services), Health; Sutton and Cheam, Liberal Democrat).

The debate concluded with the following statement from Paul Burstow:

I am looking at my notes on the points about benefits that the hon. Gentleman made and the precise time scales. Obviously, I am not the Minister responsible for the review of welfare benefits, which several hon. Members have mentioned, but it is clear that the timetable is quick and that reports back will be made during the spending review. Hon. Members who have representations to make about how we ensure that carers' interests are served within those changes should therefore make them now. This debate is a good part of that process, and I will ensure that the matter is kept in the minds of Ministers and officials.

What We Do

Carers Poverty Protest Petition 2010, Downing StreetThe Alliance has been active for over 2 years and has successfully organised a Carers Poverty Protest in both 2009 and 2010 when many Carer Groups worked together towards a single goal, to fight for the rights of carers that care for their loved ones and forced to live in poverty.

Starting off as the Carers Poverty Protest, with the 2009 protest proving successful,  those concerned wished to continue bringing Carer issues to the fore and so the Carers Poverty Alliance came into being.

Carers have almost no chance of improving their circumstances due to the limitations placed on them by the benefits system and by the lack of affordable, reliable and appropriate respite.

Carers save the NHS, the Government and the tax payer over £87 billion every year.

Official Announcement: From Christine Steel

We have for some time considered Fundraising, however we all agreed we would never, ever allow Carers or their families to donate money.

As you are all aware, we have self funded since we started in 2008, but we want the organisation to grow.

Recently I went to a few meetings in the area where I live, and met a lady called Pat Hall who has raised over £250,000 for various charities, including the Roy Pitman Society "Donation of Life". As she is helping us raise funds for our organisation it has been agreed that 10% of all money raised will go to Lancashire Teaching Hospital Donor Bereavement Committee.
