Supporting Carers Debate in Westminster (1st July 2010)

Carers were the subject of a debate in Westminster yesterday where many MPs asked questions to Paul Burstow (Minister of State (Care Services), Health; Sutton and Cheam, Liberal Democrat).

The debate concluded with the following statement from Paul Burstow:

I am looking at my notes on the points about benefits that the hon. Gentleman made and the precise time scales. Obviously, I am not the Minister responsible for the review of welfare benefits, which several hon. Members have mentioned, but it is clear that the timetable is quick and that reports back will be made during the spending review. Hon. Members who have representations to make about how we ensure that carers' interests are served within those changes should therefore make them now. This debate is a good part of that process, and I will ensure that the matter is kept in the minds of Ministers and officials.

Coalition Programme for Government

This website is the online version of The Coalition: our programme for government. It sets out a programme for partnership government over the next five years.

The website has a menu list on the right for different areas of the programme, including the NHS, Pensions and older people, Social care and disablity.

Coalition Programme - What it means for Carers

The Coalition agreement is the result of negotiations between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats, and sets out their joint plans for government for the next five years.

Welfare reform

The Coalition has promised to impose tougher benefits conditionality on those who turn down job offers. Work clubs will also be introduced for those looking for work so that they can gather skills, make contacts and support each other.

The Government has pledged that all current claimants of Incapacity Benefit will be reassessed for readiness to work, any who are seen to be fully capable of working will be moved on to Jobseeker's Allowance.

Coalition Document for Health and Social Care

A new independent commission will be established to advise the Government on the future funding of long-term care and the NHS will be reformed to improve patient outcomes, Health Secretary Andrew Lansley announced on the 20th May 2010.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said:

'This document sets out a clear message to the NHS. That our united vision is for a healthcare system which achieves outcomes that are amongst the best in the world, and free from day-to-day political interference.
